Speaker: Sherry Klein, Dress for Success Michiana
TOPIC: How we can help women succeed with Dress for Success.
Dress for Success Michiana is entering their third year serving our community. They empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire, and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Best known for their suiting program, but much more than the suit. Dress for Success has helped more than 1 million women globally successfully enter the workforce, re-launch their careers, and better support their families.
About our Speaker: After 17 years of experience in the employment & training industry, I was laid off due to a reduction in company revenue. I always thought I had empathy and compassion for people re-entering the workforce, but until you live it, there’s no “real” understanding it. Job searching came with its own unique set of challenges. Learning how to reinvent yourself and demonstrate your skills are relevant in an ever-changing world, and effectively selling yourself in a job interview is hard, especially being a woman over 40. You have to maintain emotional resilience in the face of no responses, the “we’ll be in touch” responses, the “after careful consideration, we have gone with another candidate” responses, and my favorite, being ghosted. Job searching can be soul crushing without the right perspective. I knew I wanted to stay in the nonprofit realm, and knew if given the opportunity, would make a passionate executive director. I did what I always do when I need to gain perspective & enhance my skills set, and enrolled in a certification program for nonprofit fund development through Notre Dame’s Mendoza School of Business. It’s here, through a supplemental reading assignment, that I re-discovered Dress for Success. It started with a desire to donate my business suits to another woman facing the same uncertainty to let her know she is not alone. A desire to volunteer and researching location options, discovered there was no affiliate serving South Bend and the surrounding areas. I couldn’t get Dress for Success out of my head. I researched & watched everything Dress for Success. The mission of helping women find their vision of self-defined success through career development, job retention, and career advancement, aligned with my passion and experience in workforce development, and I knew I had found my calling. I clicked the “Start an Affiliate” link, and here we are. Dress for Success Michiana received its affiliate approval in August of 2018.
